Boating Safety Tips

The temperatures are rising. The sun is shining. The lakes are beckoning. The time to uncover your boat is fast approaching, and you can’t wait to get out there. You can almost smell the water and feel the wind in your face as you run your hand along the bow in your garage. In preparation for the coming boating weather, it’s a good idea to review the safety tips for you and your family. A refresher never hurt anyone.

Personal Safety

Wear a life jacket that fits. It should be snug to your body, ensuring that if you were thrown into the water, the jacket wouldn’t slip up past your head. You want it to float your head above the water.

Don’t drink and boat. The implications for such actions are the same as driving. For one, you become an impaired driver with limited judgment and reaction time. For another, drinking dehydrates you, ironically enough. Combine the dehydration with the heat of the sun, and you could suffer from heat exhaustion before you know it. If you’re going to drink anything, make sure its water, juice, or some other hydrating liquid to keep you alert and attentive.

Others’ Safety

Give children under than 13 a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD. Don’t settle for anything but that when bringing your precious cargo around.

Do not exceed your maximum limit of passengers. Why risk it? Your boat is only guaranteed to operate safely with a certain number of people. When you stay within that limit, you maximize your safety.

Always have a second lookout as you drive. Have a second mate to keep an eye on the water. He or she can often see things that you would normally miss.

Follow the normal safety rules when you approach another boat. Slow down and be careful.

Finally, enroll in a boater education class. Rules, regulations, and tips change from year to year. Enroll in a class to refresh and learn more about what you can be doing to ensure other people’s safety on the lake this year. A happy journey is a safe one. Keep yourself and those around you safe as you set off for another summer of fun.
