Holiday Safety for Your Kids

As the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. This holiday season couldn’t be marred more than by a mishap with well-intended decorations. Make sure that you don’t make any dangerous mistakes while decorating this year.

Christmas Tree

If you plan on purchasing an artificial tree, make sure it has a “fire resistant” label on it. Do not place it near fireplaces or heaters of any kind. Make sure it’s out of the way of frequent foot traffic zones and doorways.

Double check all of your lights to make sure that there are not frayed wires or broken sockets. Beware of using them on metallic trees, as it can have an electric reaction. Always keep them out of reach of young children that may want to chew on it. Only use lights outdoors that are authorized specifically for that purpose. Hang them with hooks, and never use nails or tacks.

Any decorations on the tree should be flame resistant, which means never using lighted candles as tree decorations. If you do use candles elsewhere, make sure they are out of reach of children. After unwrapping all the presents remove any paper, bags, ribbons, and miscellaneous wrappings from the floor and fireplace area. Young children may choke on these items, especially if they look like candy. They can also be a fire hazard.

Your kids aren’t the only ones that run the risk of getting hurt this holiday season, so make sure your home is completely safe and family-friendly.
