Applying sunscreen on a daily basis may seem like an annoying and pointless task. However, protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays is vital if you want healthy skin in the long run.

Sun burns can happen during any season, especially when you spend so much time on the beach. Here we explain the dangers of the sun and tips for avoiding harmful sunburns.

How dangerous can it be?

The powerful UV rays of the sun begin to harm your skin within 15 minutes of being outside. With repeated damage, your skin will become dry, wrinkled, and leathery; and although your skin may appear tough, it’s actually weakened.

But the sun's good for me, right?

The sun is a source of vitamin D, which is vital to our health. However, many foods these days are fortified with vitamin D, and so it isn’t as necessary to get it from the sun.

But being outside feels good, and the last thing you want to do is become a recluse, shunning the sun at every opportunity.

Tips to avoid sunburn

In order to enjoy the benefits of being outside, you’ll need to use sunscreen, and use it often. To protect yourself adequately:

  • Apply sunscreen before you go outside.
  • Use an SPF of 15 or higher.
  • Apply generously on trouble areas like the neck, back, and face.
  • Use sunscreen lip balm to protect your lips.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, hats, sunglasses, etc. on especially sunny days.

A great state like California can offer you a wide variety of outdoor activities, all year round. Just be sure to wear your sunscreen, even in cooler months.
